Chapter Eight

Augustus

“I told you that my family was large and that the King also has a large family.” I wasn’t sure where to start, how to explain to him that I’d deliberately lied about my past, about who I was. I wasn’t going to try to paint it any differently, lying is exactly what I’d done, no matter how noble my intentions had been.

“Yes.” Wendell leaned closer to the car door, and farther away from me.

I wanted to pull him into my arms and feel his skin against mine again. I hoped that moment on the pier wasn’t my last time holding him in my arms.

“I am the second born son of King Markus Genthner.”

Wendell’s eyes widened. “Second born, so second heir? You’re a prince?”

I grimaced. “Yes. But I’m only second heir until my brother and his omega marry and have children. Then I’ll be moved down the line.” I couldn’t wait to be out of the line of succession. I would never be completely out of it unless I really did relinquish my title, but the farther I was from the top, the more I could breathe and be free.

Wendell’s mouth opened, then closed again and he narrowed his eyes. “You lied to me.”

My stomach churned. “Not—I mean, yes, technically, I did. But I—”

“Gus—can I even call you Gus?” His lip curled as he stared at me. His gazed roved my face like he’d never seen it before.

“Of course, you can. Wendell, this changes nothing about how I feel for you. I still want to marry you.”

“Marry me?”

Fuck. We hadn’t gotten to that part of the conversation I was trying to have with him before the press arrived.

Wendell’s breaths turned shallow and he tugged at his shirt.

“Wendell, breathe. I need you to calm down.”

“Calm down? I just found out that the guy I have been sort of dating, and thinking I was in love with is a prince! You calm down!”

I reached for him, but he pulled away. He was nearly plastered against the door of the car. “I’m sorry, Wendell. I was just about to tell you when the paparazzi arrived.”

He rolled his eyes. “Sure. That’s convenient.” He put his head in his hands. “Gus, I thought—I don’t know what I thought or what to think anymore.”

“I am the same man you met yesterday and spent the night with. The only thing that has changed is my title.”

“That seems pretty important.” He wrung his hands together and I longed to hold him. I wanted my touch to comfort him like it had just hours before.

“It is. But I am the same person.”

“What were you saying about marriage? We can’t get married. We just met!”

I reached for his hand and this time he let me take it. “My father—”

“The King.”

“Yes, the King. He has decided to enforce a law that is old and outdated. It states that all of the King’s offspring must be married before their thirtieth birthday, else they will lose their titles.”

Wendell sucked in a breath. “So, you came to the states to find a husband?”

“Yes, but—”

“That’s crazy, Gus.
